5 Holy Thor Hilarious stars
The Bet was my first Rachel Van Dyken book and to say that I
fell in love with her writing and these characters when I read it last year
would be a major understatement! Rachel never fails to make me fall in love
with her characters because there is never ANYTHING predictable. Plus this series
gave us Grandma Nadine, and if you haven’t yet read these let me just tell ya
she steals the show!! This installment finds all our favorites from The Bet and
The Wager and it sets us on a whirlwind of love, laughter and the pursuit of
happy-ever-after.
Beth has always been the quiet, smart and unassuming one in
her family. Her nickname in high school was boring Beth, and at this point she
is wondering if she should just go ahead and adopt the cat she has saved on the
shelter website and begin her path as the crazy cat lady. She works as a
chemist, loves her kindle and her sister; but she wishes for someone to love
her. After watching her sister get tricked into marrying Jake and watching her
friend Kacey marry Travis, Beth is a bit depressed and just wants to drink
herself into oblivion and forget everything. Enter Grandma Nadine (and when she
gets involved things are always a bit unpredictable). Beth wakes up with a sexy
as sin Senator the next morning; and neither really remembers what happened
other than nakedness, drunkenness and cookie fits.
What ensues is nothing short of a crazy adventure as they
find themselves hiding from the paparazzi and are whisked along with the
newlyweds to Hawaii via Grandma. Despite both Jace and Beth’s protests to the
contrary they have crazy electric chemistry and despite neither initially
saying anything, they remember each other and the unforgettable encounter they
had at Beth’s senior prom. It was that night, that dance, that kiss that
altered them both. Beth says “that one touch had destroyed my idea of what a
kiss should feel like.” For Jace he ponders that “life isn’t like the movies,
and Beth isn’t like any other girl I’ve ever met.” So it seems both are
affected by the other, but Jace has been burned in the past and can’t see
committing to anyone again, even Beth.
However with Grandma’s meddling the pair find that they are more alike
than they believe and not just that but that crazy chemistry they had as teens?
Oh yeah they got that big time! But can chemistry that sets them both ablaze
turn into the happy ever after that Beth craves and that scares Jace to death?
Well if Grandma gets her crazy matchmaking way, yes it will though they will
have to overcome couples therapy, Viagra tea, killer spiders named Frank and the
ever popular dose of Benadryl.
Well I have to say that Rachel wrapped up this trilogy in
the most wonderful of ways. A happily ever after that was ever so gratifying!
In some ways I loved this installment the most because I identified with Beth a
lot, but then I think that I’m not sure I can choose because those Titus boys
and their girls were yummy too! Though Jace had the Thor thing happening and
that was “Holy Thor” hot!! All and all I laughed, I cried and I cheered! It was
a great story of hope, of family and love; and a great reminder that life is
short and if you’re not prepared to take a leap of faith you may just miss your
chance at happiness.
