ON THE ROCKS
Last Call, #1
Adult Contemporary Romance
Releasing February 17th, 2014

He left to travel the world for fame and glory, but only after spurning Gabby Ward and crushing her young heart. Now Hunter Markham has come back home to the sand and salty breeze of the North Carolina Outer Banks so he can open up Last Call, a beach bar nestled among the dunes of the Atlantic.

Gabby Ward is not happy that Hunter has returned. Bitter over his rebuff years before, she’s content to stay far away from him and his dangerously charming ways.

Gabby’s well-schemed plans to ignore Hunter go up in flames when he presents an offer to her that she simply can’t refuse, throwing them together in a common quest to each reach their goals. Working together day in and day out proves to be problematic for Gabby, who soon realizes that the feelings she had for him are still very much alive. Hunter struggles to reach through to Gabby’s cold heart, all while starting a new career away from his life as a top ranked, professional surfer.

What starts out as a mutual business arrangement soon turns into a passion that neither of them can continue to deny.

Hard choices lay ahead for both of them when Hunter is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to return to the pro surfing tour.

Choices that could destroy what they have built or take them further than they ever had dared to hope

Amber's Review:

On the Rocks is the first in the new Last Call series from Sawyer Bennett. Set on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the story centers on Gabby Ward and Hunter Markham. Gabby and Hunter have known one another their whole lives as Hunter is the older brother of Gabby’s best friend Casey and the focus of most of her fantasies. Hunter has been gone for most of the past 10yrs as a professional surfer but now he’s back, has opened The Last Call Bar & Grill and Gabby has to convince him to give her a chance to remodel the bar while she convinces herself she hates him. Yeah one of these things is not gonna happen and what ensues is a lot like riding waves, full of twists, swells and a few wipeouts before you can find your own nirvana.

This is a story of second chances. For Gabby it’s a second chance at what she always wanted and was afraid she’d never get. For Hunter it’s a second chance to get what he wanted but was too scared before to try. It’s the story of finding what really makes you happy and believing that you deserve it. How many of us wish we could have that; have that second chance even if it’s scary as hell?!

Gabby feels like the only way she has been able to survive the devastation that was Hunter Markham is to be a total bitch to him at every turn. I think this both freaks Hunter out and amuses him, but he’s determined to get her to forgive him for being an idiot and hurting her so badly when they were kids. He finally sees her as the beautiful woman she is and can admit “she’s under my skin; and I sure as hell am not looking at her as a little sister anymore”. Gabby however is scared. Scared that if Hunter doesn’t give her the shot at completing his remodel, her dream of keeping her father’s construction business alive will die and scared that Hunter will devastate her once again. And he shocks her from the moment she shares her bid for the job, kissing the hell out of her and basically telling her that he wants her; which pisses Gabby off but Hunter isn’t going to let her go that easily. He tells her “we are going to happen no matter what. . .”

What starts off as two people deciding to just see where the obvious attraction they share leads (while not telling anyone) it begins to spiral into more, and becomes a balance of Hunter trying to convince Gabby he’s in this for real and Gabby trying to convince herself that she’s not going to be left once again with a shattered heart.  One thing is for sure Hunter and Gabby have amazing chemistry!  In many ways I liked this story because Hunter was so sure of himself. Once he realized that what he felt for Gabby was the real deal, it was all about him trying to help her see it and believe not only in herself but in them having a future.  I loved Hunter!! He was so self-assured and supportive of not only his family, his friends but especially Gabby. I loved that he recognized that she always put others ahead of herself and he wanted her to live her own dreams. Seriously if she didn’t wake up and take this chance with him I wanted to because he’s that amazing in my opinion!

This is going to be a great series!  I can’t wait for the next book that will be Brody and Alyssa’s story, because with all the tension between the two you know there is a great story waiting!!
