ABOUT ALL THE PRETTY LIES:

All the Pretty Lies

“Live, no regrets”

Her…

Sloane Locke has led a sheltered life.  However, with a history like hers, she can understand why her brothers and her father want so much to protect her.  She has gone along with it for twenty long years, but those days are over.  For the girl who never makes promises, Sloane has made a pact with herself that things will change on her twenty-first birthday.  So when the clock strikes midnight, Sloane strikes out to spread her wings and break a few rules.

Him…

In addition to inking skin, Hemi Spencer possesses many talents. Controlling himself has never been one of them.  It’s never had to be.  He’s lived a life of indulgence for as long as he can remember.  Right up until tragedy struck.  Now, he’s nothing but controlled. He’s a man on a mission, one who will let nothing and no one stand in his way.

Them…

Nothing in their lives could’ve prepared Sloane and Hemi for what they’d find in each other—distraction and obsession, love and possession.  But the one thing they can’t find is a future.  Neither one has been totally honest.  And they’ll soon learn that the devil is in the details.  In the details and in the lies.

How far will two people go to live in the now when the now is all they’ve got?

“I don’t want promises. Most of the time, promises are just pretty lies.”

This isn’t the line of the book that hooked me, but it’s probably one of the ones that made the biggest impact. All The Pretty Lies is M. Leighton’s newest and for me one of her best works to date. And trust me for me to love characters of hers more than Cash, Nash, Olivia or Trick & Cami is saying a lot!! I admit I’m a HUGE M. Leighton fan and she continues to impress me book after book. Hemi and Sloane are both hiding things, but at the same time their secrets are what draws them together and draws us the readers.

From the opening page I knew this book was gonna get me where I live and it didn’t disappoint.

It opens with Sloane meeting Hemi for the first time when she goes to get her tattoo after her 21st birthday. A birthday with significance, so she decides she is going to break out of her protected shell. A gifted artist, she has created her tat to reflect her coming into her own and beginning to build a life outside the confines of her overly protective dad and brothers, all of whom are cops that treat her like she’s made of glass. Hemi is as drawn to Sloane as she is to him and when they touch, well it’s just electric and that jumps off the page to you. The slow build of their relationship, the sexual chemistry…is just Wow! Hemi is HOT and I think the more that he tries to resist his feelings for Sloane the hotter he became for me and the more frustrated that Sloane became. As she convinces him to teach her to become a tattoo artist for a class and they are around each other more, it becomes harder for them both. The night that Hemi watches Sloane pose nude for an art class is the ultimate game changer in their relationship. Oh. My. Wow! Was that scene hot to read!! Seriously prepare yourselves!!

But Hemi has secrets. He wants things from Sloane. He wants many things from Sloane, some she wants to give. Some she doesn’t anticipate, nor does Hemi anticipate the consequences of them. For the past few years Hemi has been focused on one thing and though meeting Sloane puts in motion an ending to that, it also starts a chain reaction that he’s not sure he’s prepared to control or handle. Can he achieve his goal without hurting either of them? That’s one of the questions of this story.

As always, Michelle continues to craft scenes that make you have to fan yourself. Plus I don’t think I can look at certain things the same and not think of scenes or character interactions; and most of the time not giggle to myself or need a blast of cool air! This book combines all the things I love about Michelle’s writing. You have the undeniable chemistry between the characters, secrets, some “oh my God I didn’t just read that!” moments and then those moments that make you wanna either crawl in the story or yell at Michelle!! It was a great thrill ride and a definite must read!! Matter of fact, I think I need another Hemi fix now so I’m gonna go re-read it!!

Favorite Quotes

+ “What if I’m not that innocent?” His lips quirk in a wry a grin. “Oh, you’re exactly that innocent. I can practically smell it on you. Sweet, pure, untouched. And, if I’m being honest, I’d like nothing better than to taste that on the tip of my tongue.”

+ “What makes you think you’d ruin my life?” “Oh trust me. I would”…

+ His eyes are on me, and they’re glowing with…something. We are kindred spirits. I sense it, as I’m sure Hemi does. Or at least I hope he does. We both love art. We’re both consumed by it. And happily so. We both escape in it. Hide in it. Hide from the reality of our secrets…

+ “I’m in love with Hemi. There’s no sense even pretending that I’m not anymore. Does it change anything? No. I wish it did, but I don’t think it will. Do I regret it? No again…Whatever heartache comes, it was worth it. It was all worth it. However long I may live, I’ll have this time.”

+ “Ask me to kiss you, baby. Please. Please, God, ask me to kiss you. I need you, Sloane. I need to feel you”…

+ “The most important thing is to live life the best we can until then. Nobody has the promise of tomorrow. The only thing we can control is living today with no regret”…

+ “It’s why I’ve never made promises. We’re humans. Frail and short-sighted. We don’t have the right to make promises we have no way of keeping.”

+ “You are my hope. You are the promis of my future. Without you, I have only regret. Nothing good. Or colorful. Or beautiful. Just death and sadness. You brought me to life, Sloane, and I don’t ever want to be apart from you”…

+ “Not today. I want to do depraved things to you every day after today.”
